If you do not have a gMail account . . .

To get started, go to G Mail and setup an email account. Be sure to include your current email account during the set-up process.

Don't hide your light under a bushel!

Here is a way to let your light shine.

If you want to reach more potential customers here is an effective and easy way to spread the news about what you offer!

A blog will give you and your business a platform and a place to link with those who are in related fields as well as interested parties.

The words you use to describe your business in the blog can be picked up by search engines.

Give the reader thoughtful information, for example, a new service you are offering or tips for the reader to employ now. When the reader is looking for more in depth help they will seek you out.

You say you do not have time to blog? If you are not blogging you are missing an excellent opportunity to promote what you do in an easy, cost effective way. Do you send a newsletter? Put the contents into your blog! Participating in an event? Put it in your blog! Write articles for other web site? Put them in your blog!

You get the idea. Take it from here.

Book cover design

Do you want to . . .

  • record all the family recipes you have collected over the years?
  • publish your recipes to use as a marketing tool for your restaurant?
  • raise money for your organization by publishing a cookbook?
  • publish your novel or research project?
The part that appears to be the easiest is gathering the information!

Now what?

How do you get it published? It is easier than ever to do. There are several options but all include a few basic requirements.
  • How will your book be bound? Paperback, spiral? Hardcover with a dust jacket?
  • What size will your book be, number of pages?

And . . . you will need a cover that meets your printer's specifications. These are decisions to make before you finish the formatting of the pages. These decisions will affect the layout of the interior and the dimensions and layout of your cover. The publisher/printer will have specifications for the cover. If you are creating the cover yourself check with the publisher for this information.

What happens next?

If you would like to have the cover designed for you by DesignOnline send an email to me at DesignOnline with the following information. A quote will be sent to you in a return email.
  • Number of pages -
  • Size of your book -
  • Type of binding -
  • Book title -
  • Book subtitle - if you are going to have one -
  • Author's name -
  • Photographs or illustrations for front & back -
  • Text for back cover -
  • ISBN - If you are selling your book you will need an ISBN. Purchase the number here: isbn.org
  • Deadline date -

And then?

Once you have agreed to the contracted amount by email, your information will be reviewed. Any issues will be addressed. You may submit as many images as you wish. The basic design services include up to six images. Each image will be converted to the required format. This is an area that can create concern. If your images do not contain enough information they may not be suitable. For example, you have taken a free image from the internet. It has been formatted to load quickly in the browser window which means much of the information has been removed. Here is an example.

If you do not have images, there are suitable images available online from a number of companies for a reasonable cost. The images will have to comply with the publisher's specifications. Please check with me before buying to be sure you will be purchasing an image suitable for your project.

DesignOnline is dedicated to working with you to set the proper tone for your book and to getting your cover design completed within your time frame.

Get creative in 2019

With Spring on its way... it is time to get creative before the great outdoors beckons.

I have been looking at doing more sketching with pencil and pen and ink, working with watercolors, doing acrylic pourings, working with photographs as well as developing new projects for the non-profit I am a part of. But first... I must organize the accumilated piles of papers that have gathered on the desk (and on the floor near by!).

Tips for dealing with the accumulated detritus:

  • Put all of the piles of papers, magazines, etc. on a larger surface.
  • Sort into piles and into the wastebasket when required.
  • Next take each pile and sort through again.
  • File the important things.
  • Try to complete the must-do pile immediately, ie: income tax related bookkeeping, order supplies, renew subscriptions, etc.
  • Go through the magazines, newsletters, etc. keep what you must and give the rest away or recycle.
  • Have a place for each area of interest, ie: genealogy, specific projects,  must-do. Add more book shelves and file cabinets when you must.
  • In the future - when the mail arrives stand over the wastebasket and throw away everything you do not need immediately.

Why images from the web don't work

The image to the left represents a cover that measures 6" x 9". When you download an image from the web it has been re-sized to load quickly in your browser which means a lot of the information (or dots) have been removed. The photo of the toast looked quite large in my browser but, as you can see, on this cover it becomes too small to have much impact.

There are many site that offer images for sale, many at very reasonable rates. Some require an acknowledgement. Be sure you read the permission section and copy and save that information with each image.

If you have any questions, please send an email!

Why images from the web don't work . . .

Images created to load quickly on the web do not have enough information in them for a print project.
